GAIS lost 2-0 away to Djurgården on Monday evening in a match marred by a controversial red card. Djurgården's 21-year-old Greek midfielder Christos Almyras was sent off for kicking GAIS player Henry Sletsjö while lying on his back.
The incident leading to the dismissal occurred in the second half. Almyras ended up on the ground and made a kicking motion with his leg towards Sletsjö. The referee deemed it a straight red card. "The referee thinks I touched him, but if you see the clip you see that I tried to avoid him," Almyras said afterwards.
The GAIS player Henry Sletsjö said he did not clearly remember the kick itself but felt pain in his foot after landing. Following the red card, several GAIS players approached Almyras and shoved him. Almyras recounted that two players came over and pushed him without reason as he tried to speak to the referee.
Honkavaara criticises decision
Djurgården head coach Jani Honkavaara did not see the incident live but reviewed the video after the match. He disagreed with the decision. "But I saw it now, and for me it is not a red card. Christos was trying to get away from the situation," Honkavaara explained.
GAIS had already been reduced to ten men earlier in the match. Centre-back Oskar Ågren received his second yellow card in the 59th minute, leaving GAIS with nine men on the pitch for a long period. The goals came via Kristian Strømland Lien in the 35th minute and Bo Åsulv Hegland in the 63rd. Hegland assisted the first goal and Strømland Lien the second.
The defeat means GAIS remain in 10th place in the Allsvenskan with 27 points after 21 rounds. The team has won seven, drawn six and lost eight matches so far this season. They trail league leaders Sirius by 21 points. The next match is away against 12th-placed Mjällby AIF on September 20, an important opportunity to pick up points.
Injury-wise, GAIS are still without Anes Cardaklija and Róbert Frosti Thorkelsson. The team's top scorer this season is S. Salter with six goals. After the Mjällby match, there is a break in league play before the next round.

Djurgården has confirmed that Oskar Fallenius was the only player unavailable for the squad ahead of Monday's 2-0 win over GAIS, according to the club's match report. The team noted that Bo Hegland equaled the all-time Allsvenskan assist record when he set up Kristian Lien's opening goal in the 35th minute. GAIS, sitting 10th in Allsvenskan with 27 points, have conceded 20 goals in 21 games.
