Ibrahim Diabate has extended his contract with GAIS but will spend the immediate future on loan in Turkey. The 26-year-old Ivorian forward signed a new deal keeping him at the Swedish club until 2029, but is simultaneously being loaned to Erzurumspor until June 2027, according to a report from SVT Nyheter.

Erzurumspor, who play in Turkey's top division, also hold an option to purchase Diabate permanently. This marks the second loan spell in quick succession for the striker. During the spring he was on loan at Spanish side Alavés, where he scored the winning goal in a 1-0 victory against Barcelona in May. Last season he won the Allsvenskan top scorer title with 18 goals for GAIS.

Why is Diabate being loaned out again?

GAIS technical director Magnus Sköldmark explained the reasoning behind the decision. "We are happy to have reached a solution for Diabate with Erzurumspor," Sköldmark said. "An important parameter has been the player's desire for continued play in Europe and in one of the major leagues."

The club currently sits tenth in the Allsvenskan table with 23 points from 18 matches. They have six wins, five draws, and seven losses. Their goal difference is positive at +3, with 21 goals scored and 18 conceded. However, they trail league leaders Sirius by a significant 19 points, making a title challenge unlikely this season. The current squad's top scorer is S. Salter with five goals in 17 appearances.

How does this affect GAIS's attack?

Without Diabate, GAIS must rely on other offensive players for the remainder of 2026. The club has already shown they can score, with 21 goals in 18 matches. But they also have an inconsistent recent form, with their last five results reading loss, loss, win, draw, loss. The next fixture is an important away match against Mjällby AIF on September 20th. Mjällby sits just behind GAIS in eleventh place, making it a direct duel for mid-table positioning. All upcoming matches are listed on our fixtures page.

What happens next for Diabate's future?

The contract extension until 2029 gives GAIS a strong negotiating position should Erzurumspor choose to exercise their purchase option. If Diabate excels in Turkey, the club could realize a significant transfer fee. If he returns to Gothenburg after the loan, they still have a top player contracted for several more seasons.

Diabate's performances in Spain demonstrated his potential at the European level. His match-winning goal against Barcelona is proof of his quality in top divisions. In Turkey, he now gets the chance to establish himself in another of the continent's major leagues.

GAIS now focus on stabilizing their league position. With a +3 goal difference and a relatively stable defense, they have a foundation to build upon. The complete league table with all current positions and statistics can always be found on our standings page. Without Diabate's goalscoring, others must step up to ensure the club remains securely in the middle of the Allsvenskan table during the autumn season.
