GAIS forces schedule change – IFK Göteborg plays a day earlier

GAIS has created a scheduling clash at Gamla Ullevi that forces IFK Göteborg to move its Conference League first leg from July 23 to July 21. The conflict arose because both Gothenburg clubs were drawn into the same group in the second qualifying round.

What exactly happened?

IFK Göteborg was set to face either Welsh side Caernarfon Town FC or Estonian FCI Levadia Tallinn in the second qualifying round. At the same time GAIS also advanced to the same round, meaning two home matches would be scheduled on the same day at Gamla Ullevi. To avoid a double‑booking, IFK’s match was moved forward by two days, while the return leg on foreign soil will be played on Thursday, July 30.

Why does it matter for GAIS?

Even though GAIS themselves are not in the Conference League, they gain an indirect advantage: the rescheduled match gives them extra training days before their next Allsvenskan fixture. Moreover, it shows how GAIS’s success can influence the entire Gothenburg football calendar. The club currently sits third in Allsvenskan with 52 points after 30 games, recent form LDWWW, and has scored 45 goals while conceding 30, a +15 goal difference. They are 23 points behind leaders Mjällby AIF in the title race.

What does this mean for IFK Göteborg?

The earlier kickoff results in a tighter schedule for IFK Göteborg, but the manager trusts the squad’s ability to handle the pressure. "These are tough teams, but we are ready for the challenge and want to reach Europe – that’s our goal," said Ramon Pascal Lundqvist. Noah Tolf looks forward to his first matches abroad and believes the experience will be valuable for the team.

How does this affect the rest of the season?

In addition to the international fixture, IFK Göteborg’s Allsvenskan match against IF Brommapojkarna moves from July 19 to July 17. This gives GAIS a chance to focus on their own upcoming home game without sharing the stadium with another large crowd. With their current standing and strong form, GAIS can continue to press for higher positions, especially if they manage to tighten up their defensive lapses.

What’s next?

GAIS’s next match is scheduled for July 24 against Östers IF at Gamla Ullevi. The coach hopes the extra rest day after the rescheduled IFK game allows the squad to fine‑tune tactics. Meanwhile IFK Göteborg awaits its first European match in two years, which could bring extra exposure for Swedish football on the continent.
