GAIS faces FC Nordsjälland in the Conference League qualifiers – their first European match in 36 years. The last time they played in Europe was in 1990 against Torpedo Moskva, a trip that legend Sören Järelöv remembers as a fantastic experience.

What happened in GAIS' last European tournament?

GAIS' last European tournament was in 1990, when they faced Torpedo Moskva in the UEFA Cup. The team had qualified via the Intertoto Cup and lost to Moscow 4–1 in the away match. Goalkeeper and captain Sören Järelöv remembers the trip to Moscow as an unforgettable experience.

– It was a fantastic experience just to get to Moscow at that time, says Järelöv.

Why is the European qualifier important for GAIS?

GAIS has gone from playing in the Superettan to European qualifiers in just three years. In 1990, they made a similar journey: victory in Division 1 Södra 1988 led to European games in 1990. Today, GAIS is 13th in the Allsvenskan with 0 points from two matches and a goal difference of -3.

– We are a team that can take Nordsjälland. 50/50 is probably. Then we know they are strong, says board member Johan Larsson.

What does the legend say about GAIS' chances?

Sören Järelöv believes in a GAIS victory against FC Nordsjälland.

– The chances are great. GAIS has a broad squad, good organization and a good coach. If they believe in their own game, it will go well. We win by the odd goal: 2–1, says Järelöv.

GAIS' next match is against Malmö FF at home at Gamla Ullevi on August 16. Malmö FF is second in the table.
